Managing your wedding budget

Updated: Oct 26, 2021

The most popular question I hear from clients is how to create a wedding budget. Creating a wedding budget can seem overwhelming, but if you take your time and think through it logically, you’ll feel much more relaxed and prepared as the average cost for a wedding in British Columbia is $35,000, and that is a big hole burnt in their pocket. So how can you scale back your expenses without sacrificing your perfect wedding day?

FAMILY MEETING

First, sit down with your families to discuss what financial assistance they are willing to put forward. Do they have rules as to how their contribution is spent?

SAVE, SAVE, SAVE

Next, be brutally honest with how much can you realistically save for the wedding over the planning period.

SET YOUR PRIORITIES

Now that you have determined the dollar amount you have to work with for the wedding, it’s time to make a priority list of which elements are most important to you.

BREAKING DOWN YOUR BUDGET

Once you have finished prioritizing each wedding element, you’ll need to start assigning them percentages of your overall budget. The largest part of your budget (around 50%) should be assigned to your venue, catering and alcohol.

MODERN OVER TRADITIONAL

Think about how you can save money on a venue, how long your guest list actually needs to be, and think about the time of year your wedding needs to be held in. If you can implement small changes by being flexible, you can save a lot of money.

ANYONE FOR A BUFFET?

Catering can be a considerable struggle for wedding parties on a budget. However, did you know you could save money just by having a buffet over having a sit-down meal?

Having a buffet is a lot more cost-effective than plated meals, and it can also open up options for more extravagant options on the buffet, which you wouldn't be able to afford in a seated dinner.

DIY DOESN’T ALWAYS SAVE MONEY

HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER

Although some may see this as an irrelevant cost, this will actually save you in the long run. With our expert knowledge of local vendors, a wedding planner can help you get the best deal across the board. Whether it is a DJ, catering, or venue hire, wedding planners know how to get the best value for you and your other half.

They help with the preparation, but they are also there to help you to make sure everything goes smoothly. The last thing you want is to spend all this money but then have to rush around to ensure everything goes to plan. With a wedding planner, they take care of all behind the scenes action so you can enjoy your day in peace.
